The Expendables

Well I watched this film a few days ago and thought I'd do a sort of review.

The Expendables is famous for having the definitive collection of action heroes, the film boasts an all-star cast including: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Stone Cold Steve Austin.

So what is the film about, well it's about.....erm....well actually I don't really know, not because it had some ultra-complex mind bending plot, but because it didn't have a plot of any kind. This film is just non stop action without any form of motivation or reason behind it. Somewhere in there you are briefly given some sort of arbitrary reason, something about mercenaries overthrowing a corrupt dictator. Despite having such a famous cast, there is no form of character development, there isn't even any form of back-story, we are just told that all these men are in a mercenary team.

And then there is the dialogue. In the brief moments when something isn't dying, exploding or being shot at, we are treated to some of the cheesiest lines imaginable. One example is given by Schwarzenegger: 'Hey, how about dinner?.....In a thousand years'.

So if you like those over the top 80's action films with nothing but fight scenes interrupted by cheesy lines and endless cliché, then you will love this obvious tribute by an ageing cast to a bygone age. However if like me you look for a coherent meaningful plot with some form of character progression then look elsewhere.

Sorry guys!

Sorry that I haven't been doing much recently. I'm going to Uni next week so I'm very busy with sorting stuff out at the moment. I should be back to doing regular posts in a week or two.

But for the time being I will give you some verticals!

Nostalgia much?

After much thought I have decided to compile a list of my personal top 5 'retro' games (I say retro I'm only 18 so retro for me is 10 years old max) .

Number 5 - Rayman 2

This was one of the first games I got on my PS2 and was also one of my favourite. I spent hours jumping around, collecting lums and doing nothing for a while just to see Rayman play basketball with his body.

The worlds were amazing and the characters were even better, my favourite being the teensies

Number 4 - Spyro 2

Again, one of the first games I played on the PS2, and probably my absolute favourite. I absolutely loved Spyro 2, all the worlds, the characters, the story; all of it. To this day I still know how to complete several of the levels 100%.

I spent hours meticulously going through every level trying to get every single gem and orb.

My favourite level had to be Colossus, one of the first levels; involving mountains, monks and a yeti

Number 3 - Sonic the Hedgehog

Yes, of course Sonic, it had to be there. This was the first video game I ever played. I did not actually own it, but I would often borrow a Mega Drive from a friend of my dad for months on end.

Oh the frustration and hours spent in front of this game. I don't remember much, seeing as I was about 6 at the time, but I remember being incredibly frustrated at a particular underwater level, in which sonic would always drown!

Number 2 - Age of Empires 2

Well, Age of Empires 2, it speaks for itself. My first venture into PC gaming, and remains to this day the best.
The buildings, the units, the campaigns, all of it was excellent.

And then of course there was the multiplayer, my first ever multiplayer experience (save for 2-player split-screen with my friend). Hours spent playing an endless number of custom maps, some incredibly complex (the monk race in particular, anyone else play that?)

Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already! Start the game already!

Number 1 -  Pokemon Blue

THE most important decision of your life.
What else could it be but Pokemon. Pokemon was HUGE. The cartoons, the cards and most importantly the games. For about a year, school lunch times were dominated by pokemon, it was everywhere. I spent  hours and hours of my life training my little bulbasaur into a mighty venasaur.

To me, Pokemon remains the only good hand-held game...ever. You can take your brain training and Loco-Roco and shove it up your arse, nothing comes close to Pokemon!

Primer

Ok, so I watched this film Primer a while ago and...well....WTF?
When I first saw it made no sense at all. Since then I have watched it a few more times and poked around the internet and am finally sort of understanding.

For those who don't know, Primer is a 2004 film about time travel. It was written, directed, and just about everything else was done by Shane Carruth, a mathematician.

The plot deals with a pair of semi-professional inventors who accidentally invent a time machine of sorts, and all the confusing paradoxes that arise. Seeing as it was written by a mathematician and not a writer, the film is hard to follow and the time travel involved is not your classic Dr.Who simple time travel, but an insanely complex but more realistic time travel. The plot is very original, and effectively paints a picture of what would actually happen if someone were to invent time travel, that is if you can understand it.

Amazingly the film only cost $7,000 to make, but made over $424,000 quite a success i think.

So, who else has seen this, and did you understand it?

Wednesday 15 September 2010

yay 100!

Woooo I have 100 followers! Thank you everyone, I couldn't have done it without you, no REALLY I couldn't.

Anyway, I shall try and do a proper post tomorrow, but in the mean time I leave you with a rather odd man and his kazoo:

Motion control

Just a quick post, I'm in a bit of a rush today but i thought you guys would like this:

http://www.yaybuttons.com/

Its a site for the PlayStation Move, and not at all mocking of Kinect....mhm

Personally I'm not too impressed with this motion control phase gaming is going through, the wii got there first and the others seem to be following, I mean what's wrong with a good old controller? Hopefully they will grow out of it sooner or later and get on with making some half decent games.

Anyway just to pad this out a bit, here are some cool pics of space, enjoy.

Halo Reach

Although I'm not a big Halo fan (I could never take the baby blue space men seriously enough), Halo Reach is billed as one of the biggest games of the year.

So I bring you, courtesy of push-start.co.uk, the Halo Reach video review:

Dead Rising 2: Case 0

Well, I played the first Dead Rising and really enjoyed it, apart from some small annoyances the game as a whole was enjoyable. So last week i decided to download the Dead Rising 2 prequel Case 0 from XBLA.

Case 0 isn't quite a demo in that it isn't just a level plucked from the full game, it is a completely new game detailing the events leading up to DR2 and shows off the new game mechanics.

Case 0 (and by extension DR2) is very similar to DR1 in many respects, you still run around the map picking up anything you can find and whacking the slow shambling zombies with it, and the zombies remain more of an obstacle rather than something essential to the game. Case 0 also retains the time mechanic, missions have a time limit and you must complete them before the designated time, which I think is a bad idea, especially in a game where you can just lay back and have fun killing zombies for hours on end; the time mechanic almost forces you to do the missions. One thing that has been fixed however was the awful save system, you can now have up to 3 saves and there are many save points.

So what's new in DR2? Well the most obvious changes is the character, you no longer play the photographer Frank West (he's covered wars you know) this time you play Chuck Greene, a famous motor-cross racer. Due to this character change, the photography aspect of the game has been removed and replaced with something far better, weapon creation. Weapon creation allows you to combine two ordinary items to make one bad-ass zombie killer.
Be sure to check out the paddle-saw

In Case 0 there are several combo weapons to be made, however you're never told what a majority of them are, so to save frustration I will list them at the bottom.

All in all Case 0 is an excellent buy for any Dead Rising fan wanting a sneak peak at the sequel, it is also extremely enjoyable and I played through it 4 times to get all the achievements.

Electric Rake - Battery + Rake
Boomstick - Pitchfork + Shotgun
Paddle Saw - Kayak Paddle + Chainsaw
Air Horn - Spray Paint + Traffic Cone
Improvised Explosive Device - Box of Nails + Gas Can
Molotov - Newspaper + Whiskey
Drill Bucket - Bucket + Drill
Beer Hat - Bottle of Beer + Hard Hat
Spiked Bat - Baseball Bat + Nails.

The Saboteur

Right, i just finished playing The Saboteur and thought i would review it...sort of

The Saboteur is another sandbox game, but this time set in WWII Nazi occupied Paris. You play Sean Devlin the loveable Irishman who has been drafted in to the French resistance after some tragedy.

As the title suggests, a large portion of the game involves sabotaging (and by that i mean blowing up) various Nazi 'stuff'. Most missions involve going to a Nazi base, blowing sh*t up, killing Nazis and then escaping. There are 2 ways to do this: there is the standard run in and shoot everything option or the sneaky sneaky approach which involves dressing up as a Nazi and slowly walking around picking off enemy's one by one.

The game borrows heavily from other sandbox games most notably Assassins Creed. It does however have this black and white arty thing going on, areas of Paris dominated by Nazi oppression appear black and white, save for the eye catching red of the Nazi flags; while areas that have been inspired by your blowing up of stuff are in full colour.

There is also a large concentration on vehicles, seeing a Sean is a racing driver. There are various races throughout the game, in the main story and as freeplay side missions as well as a car collection mechanic; if you like a car, drive it to a garage and you can store it, with bonus' for collecting all of the cars.

All in all this is another mediocre sandbox game that, while being very good just doesn't do anything new. If you have played a lot of sandbox games, you've already seen what this game has to offer. If you don't like sandbox games, this game isn't going to change anything. But if you have never played a sandbox game, or have played a few and liked them, you should buy this game.

My Life

Not much happening at the moment, the calm before the storm. I will be going to university in about 3 weeks, Imperial College to read Physics.

I have couple of things going on this week, a friends bday, and a few trips to the pub, but that's about it.

Other than that, i have been playing Xbox a bit. I'm working my way through 'The Saboteur' and am rather enjoying it, there's just something satisfying about blowing up Nazi's that never gets old.
